Crossing things off

I have been chipping away at my Mega to-do list and avoiding the biggest task on that list at the same time, the dreaded painting job. Today I woke up, after a very late night with friends, with a huge headache (I can't imagine why! *grin*). I decided that I had to get Alex's curtains hemmed today of all days. A half hour later they were rehung about a foot shorter then they started out being and now have tie backs to let in some light. Please excuse the bad picture quality, I had to lighten the original shot a fair amount to be able to actually see the curtains. Alex told me that he likes that the curtains make his bedroom feel like a hotel.

I spent some time in the backyard yesterday raking up old leaves to use in my new compost bin and taking care of some garden maintenance. I transplanted the strawberries to a new bed, freeing up the tall bed for watermelons! I planted zucchini and eggplants around the corn to help shade the corn roots. Added two more rows of green beans, one a bush variety the other climbing. All most every square inch of our garden space is well used. Once the beans get bigger I will plant lettuce between those rows to take advantage of the shade and help keep water in the soil. I love Companion planting! I would still love to build more beds, maybe later in the summer for some Autumn harvests.

That makes two more things crossed off my Mega Monthly goal list. I am seriously thinking about tackling the ceiling painting tomorrow. It is the worst part of the whole list. I only have so many days left in my month off. Might as well get it done!

Tender

I had the absolute BEST massage of my life today.

But tonight, I feel like Anna of the Magic fingers was actually using a Meat Tenderizer on my shoulders and neck.

I hurt.

Oddly, I don't mind the pain so much because I remember how FABULOUS I felt after my pampering.

Like Butter.

I am Land O Nikki.

Or was... now I am happily sore.

Oh by the way, one more goal down! It is always easy to cross of a pampering day from a Mega Goal list.

One Mega May Goal completed

This weekend was supposed to be all about painting the ceiling and remaining walls but that isn't happening yet. :)

Instead I tackled our linen closet and ended bagging up a TON of pillows, old down comforters and a massive feather bed all for the trash. Now before you get all over me about donating them, seriously, NO ONE would want these. I don't even know why I was holding on to them.

At one point the upstairs hallway was stacked with the pile of pillows I pulled out of our tiny closet, 9 of them!! Why? I just keep asking myself that. So I tossed the gross ones, the ripped ones, the uncomfortable ones, and had the guys each pick one pillow for me to store in the closet for future use. I then promptly shoved those "to keep" pillows into a vacuum seal bag with a dryer sheet and stored them away. Yay!

I also took the time to go through all our towels and set aside all the ripped, frayed or stained towels to donate to the Animal Shelter. I would like to slowly switch all our towels over to All White. We are hard on towels and stains are inevitable, so being able to bleach them would be awesome. I figure as we wear out a towel I can just replace it with a new white one from Costco.

I have one non-white weakness though, Pool Towels! These I love to have in the brightest craziest patterns. I saw one at Target a couple months ago that was of goldfish, I still wish I had snagged it up. :)

So one measly mega May Goal down, tons more to go!

April Goals: let's review!

April, sweet sweet April, it's been over for all most a week, but Finals were my priority. Now that Spring semester is done, let's review how I did on my simple goals for April!

Home: Paint the Ceiling and Walls LOL, NOPE!
Organize: Office Closet Nope!
School: Focus, 4 weeks left Success!! yay for school being done!
Food: Double the Veg Oh yay baby, veg and fruit intake has sky rocketed in our house.
Family: More than couch time. Yuppers! Between the garden and TKD we are spending less and less time in front of the idiot box and more time together.
Health: 30 minutes Ummm, next!
Spiritual: Study and Reflect Picked up a new Joyce Meyer book for a song, and LOVE it and where it is taking me on my path.
Sanity: Massage and Facial BOOKED for Tuesday, so ready for three hours of pampering.

Plenty of room for improvement, with a month off I KNOW I can knock out some of the more challenging tasks. :)

Beware MEGA Organization Forthcoming

This entire post is going to give you a panic attack if you don't like clutter, mess, piles, or LOTS of stuff. You have been fore warned. :)
One of the things that I wanted to tackle in my April goals was organizing my office closet. When Alex and I swapped rooms around the holidays I was more focused on making his room presentable not to mention live-able so everything that moved to my office pretty much was just piled and stacked up. The closet was a wasteland that I only entered if it was absolutely necessary.

This lovely little corner use to be five times worse. This table held all my scrap booking stuff that I sold a couple weekends ago. I filled my entire car with stuff so you can imagine how much more was stacked there. Steve the hedgie has been hanging out on this table, just because I have no room on the floor. You can also see proof that I have commandeered all laundry baskets to act as storage baskets.

Turning to you right you would see this messy pile of stuff all most completely blocking my bookcases, there are a couple blankets for the dogs to lay on and Alex's old TV waiting for a listing on Craig's list.

Here is where all the magic happens, my desk! It is messy and full because I don't spend much time here organizing because I am busy plowing through the final four weeks of school. I have big plans for this area.

And now I bless with you a floor shot of the closet pit, ummm that pile is about 2-3 feet tall. No Joke, I have a lot of stuff.
Which brings me to my mental conversation I had with myself as I purged and organized and tried to place like with like... I have come to the conclusion that I am not a Hoarder, I can get rid of things, I don't have to mull each item over to decide if I want to part with it. BUT after I do let it go, I think about those items, specifically, and wish that I had some of it back. That longing alone was enough to scare me into ruthlessness when it came to purging and throwing stuff away. I need to get to the point where minimal is perfect, not empty.
I want each item in my home to have a purpose, a need, be functioning, be beautiful, and kept because it meets a need. Not because we just happen to have it. Ruthlessness I say!

An hour and a half later I have a clean floor in front my bookcases...

The table is gone and I have brought out my yarns and project bags and moved my work bookcase over to the empty wall. yes, there is still major organizing to do, but everything is at least not blocked and stored with it's partners, so I can chunk it all out in small bites over the rest of the month, instead of in one nightmare day.

My desk is a wee bit better, at least the garbage bag underneath it is gone, it had been sitting there since the room swap, MONTHS!

And now for your semi viewing pleasure, the closet. I muscled in the banquet table where things are grouped together and will easily be able to be sorted through one basket/box at a time. I also rearranged the shelves and will pare it all down to a simple system of neat storage instead of the hodgepodge of random storage solutions.
Beware, more organizing is to come through the rest of the month, but in small batches that will hopefully garner huge results.
I am pleased!

November Goals Reviewed

This month just flew by, I can hardly believe it will soon be Christmas time! Okay, let's see how I did this month.
Home

  • Finish Painting Downstairs, this is my focus this week! This will be done today/tomorrow, so I am counting it!
  • Finish Organizing my office. More than halfway done, it will be finished right before Alex and I swap rooms.
  • Sell Items from office. Will finish this up this month and January.
  • Price Attic insulation

Food

  • Meal Plan each week Oh man, I planned one week!
  • Make and freeze cookies and or dough for the holidays I have two doughs in the freezer, peanut butter and sugar :)
  • Inventory Pantry I need an entire day for this one, maybe over the holiday break.

Personal

  • Peter Bible study twice a week Maybe once a week, but not up to my goal.
  • Personal time with God daily. I have a hard time not marking this complete because I did spend a lot of time talking to god in my head, but I did not have many days with purposefully set aside time just for study and reflection.
  • Organize study guides and books One of the first things I did this month, I have about a year of study guides ready to go!

Garden

  • Build two new beds. This one is going to be pushed to spring.
  • Build second layers for two older beds
  • Create a frost cover for garden beds It isn't pretty, but it does the job!
  • Start compost bed with kitchen scraps, pumpkins will be my big boost for this one! Ended up doing a compost bucket and did not use the pumpkins. Man we have so much compostable waste that goes out there each day.

Health

  • Hour on the Elliptical 2 times a week Ha! I think I did one day, so sad.
  • 30 Day Shred 3 times a week Not even.

Money

  • Update Budget Weekly. I did it twice and then really focused on our holiday budget. I have to pay attention to our main budget better!
  • Finish the new budget cash flow report for both businesses. Nope.
  • Finish organizing receipts. About half way done.
  • Stay within our monthly grocery budget! Woo hoo, just shy of the amount by $4!
  • Track personal cash spending, use Money book! Nope.

The Christmas Prep

  • Purchase some Alex gifts His stocking is done and a couple gifts, will try to finish this week.
  • Address and Stamp Holiday cards Yay, so glad that this is done!
  • Sort through holiday decorations for items to toss or donate. Didn't crack a Christmas box, will do that this week.
  • Finish 4 crafty gifts. I am all most done with one. I have to put this in high gear!

Autumn Holiday Close

  • Put away all autumn decorations Done, except for one lone ceramic pumpkin that will find its box asap.
  • Inventory decorations Done!
  • Label storage crates. Done, and loving it!

Overall I got a lot done, not as many halfway done items as last month. I am looking forward to Decembers goals as I will have 3 weeks off to get LOTS done on my list. Not to mention, time to enjoy the holiday with my family and relax before school starts in January. Come back tomorrow for Decembers goals. :)

October Goals, Let's see how I Did!

All right, October has come and gone with a whooooosh! Now it is time to see how I did with the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the month. I really enjoyed this format and found myself doing things JUST to be able to cross them off. :) Guess that is how goals work right?

Okay here goes with the check list!

Home
Finish painting the Downstairs ( ugh, no comment)
Purge and organize my office ( this is in process and I will totally be done next week, so excited!)
Decorate for Fall
Organize kitchen appliances and storage in pantry

Food
Make a list of easy sauces (Just didn't get to it)
Purge Freezer and Reorganize
Inventory Pantry (started, but I need to devote a day completely uninterrupted to do this)
Clean fridge!

Personal
Peter Bible Study twice a week ( got it done about once a week, need to start up my morning devotionals again)
Thirst Bible Study weekly ( not even started!)
Finish Omnivores Dilemma ( picked up a new book instead)

Garden
Build second layers on two beds (Nov. for sure!)
Build two new beds (Nov. for sure!)

Prep one bed as a winter compost bed
Plant Mums in front yard for Autumn (Casey exercised husband veto on this one)

Health
An hour on the Elliptical 4 times a week ( HA! I am so bad)
Do 30 day Shred 3 times a week

Money
Update Budget weekly
Create new budget report for businesses (started but ran into some coding issues, still working on this one)
Organize business receipts for the summer (started! but not complete)
Stay within monthly budget for grocery! ( we went over by $75)
Track personal spending of cash money ( wasn't horrible with this, but I need to use my money book again)

The Christmas Prep
Make a Holiday budget!
Price Alex gifts
Purchase some Alex gifts. (Nov. is out gift purchasing start!)
Work on craft gifts
Organize Holiday Closet
Overall I got a lot of it done, some areas I just need to focus on ( like health and personal). I hated not being able to cross things off just because they were not completely done yet, just more motivation to do it! Look for Novembers goals tomorrow! I WILL get more done next month. :)

*whisper* omg it was scary...

Okay so one of my goals for the month of October over on the right, was to clean out our fridge and clean and organize our freezer. I knocked out the freezer a week ago in 15 minutes, it was easy peasy and had only one thing thrown away, an odd bag of tropical fruit that was questionable.
I cleared lots of stuff off the front of the fridge, but it is hard to get rid of it all cause it makes me happy.
Which left me with purging and scrubbing the fridge, something I hate to do because it is difficult to get the shelves out of the fridge and honestly we had a mess happen a while ago that I just didn't want to think about.

Loads of meats! Not a lot of veggies since we like to eat them fresh.
Today was the perfect day to get in there, take everything out, and scrub. We have friends coming this weekend to stay over and since the fridge is always in plain sight, I thought I might as well get it over with today. It is rainy and dreary and I had more then an hour to kill.
Everything was removed one shelf at a time, the expiration date was checked, it was either chucked or wiped down, and then the shelf came out for a major scrub down. I busted out my Pampered Chef scraper ( which is one of my all time favorite cheapo purchases!), the scrubby pads, lots of soap and got to cleaning. Once clean I dried the glass shelf off and then tackled the walls and tracks of that shelving area.
Its CLEAN! And organized, now just to keep it that way.
One shelf at a time I cleaned it up, straightened it all out, and realized how much salsa we have in there. I also got a really good idea of what we need to eat and what we do not need to buy again.

I think my favorite shelf is the bottom one, Wine RockStar and Vanilla Creamer, what more could I want. Oh! Applebutter, that is down there too!

The doors were super easy, all most as easy as the fridge. Can you tell that we are a sauce/condiment family. Sauces make everything tasty.

My number one reason for doing this mega purge and scrub? If the health department came and did an inspection, my kitchen would have been shut down! Eekk! So horrible to even think about!

Which leads me to ask you, Would your kitchen pass a health inspection?

October goals, let's talk about them 10 days late

I just spent 30 minutes digging around in my garden beds, prepping one for a huge batch of leafy greens, another for onions/scallions/and the like, and the other was just some weeding and thinning of my latest plantings. While up to my wrists in freshly turned soil I realized that I have yet to blog about the goals I established for myself for October.

I was inspired by Kim at The NewlyWoodwards to goal out each month. As soon as I revamped my layout, I posted my October goals in the sidebar on the right. At the end of the month I will tally up how well I did.

I love lists and I love list even more that have a timeline attached to them. Not that I follow that timeline, I just like the "count down" factor of it all.
