Neat Reciepts

How much could this help all of us!?!?!?!? I am seriously going to look into this little gadget, but in the mean time Simple Mom is giving one away! Go Sign up for it!

NeatReceipts is a hardware/software combo that allows users to scan, organize and digitize all their paper receipts and financial documents, and automates the tax preparation process. It is fully compatible with Turbo Tax, Quicken and QuickBooks, and the IRS accepts scanned images of receipts (you never know when that might be important).

Days Falling off

Yeah, I am here, have been staring at my calendar as more work days are falling off the books. It means that I am home more, but it also means that there is not a paycheck.

Anyways, Alex's birthday is in less than a week! His party is all planned, except for the bounce house, the invites are out, cake supplies will be purchased this weekend, and soon our kiddo will be NINE YEARS OLD! Holy Heck, that happened fast. I swear once you get past the diapers and bottle stage and into the "hey this kiddo can have a conversation" stage, the days and weeks and months and years fly by.

As for Shred, oopps, those days fell away too. I am going to start it back up today, make it part of my morning routine because the Shred is much better than blog reading for an hour. Right?

DayBook

FOR TODAY January 26, 2009...

Outside My Window... it is foggy and not too chilly. Hopefully we will get some rain to help with this 18 month drought.
I am thinking... breakfast, something simple, maybe eggs and English muffin.

I am thankful for... Icy Hot, dang it really works. I didn't walk up hobbling like an old women after such a crazy hike yesterday!

From the craft room... It's Craft Monday, so my mom and I are going to work on stuff to stock our new Etsy store that is soon to open!

From the kitchen... Leftovers and I might make brownies today.

I am wearing... Black yoga pants that are ancient and a yellow tank.

I am creating... crocheted goodies!

I am going... enjoy every second of my day!

I am reading... Texas, Changeling, and my bible.

I am hoping... that the damn elliptical company calls me back. Our elliptical's main steel bar CRACKED!

I am hearing... Casey snoring, puppies collars jingling and I do believe the coffee pot just signaled that it is ready!

One of my favorite things... Hot showers.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
Monday: Craft Monday with my Mom
Tuesday: Yard work if we don't get rain
Wednesday: Garden planning and planting, at the least bed prepping.
Thursday: No Scout meeting, so a nice night at home.
Friday: Hmmmm ? Maybe another photog trip with Casey.
Saturday: ??
Sunday: Church and family time.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

This is an old stage stop out at the state park we hike at. Let me tell you the road leading up to this guy is rocky and uncomfortable to walk, I can't imagine riding in a coach or a buckboard. There is not enough Icy Hot in the world to help ease those aches.

Day 3: 30 Day Shred

Another late night Shred, but I did it and that is what counts. This time Sharon joined me since she was over for tea and Lost. Archie sat in front of us the whole time watching the bouncing boobie show. Sorry folks, us girls have boobs and cardio makes them bounce.

In the perfect motivational words of Sharon, "Just think Nicole, by month two, you won't have boobs to bounce!" Awesome!

It is pretty amazing but I can all ready see a slight difference in my arms and can definitely FEEL the difference in my shoulder, back, arm, and leg muscles. And of course the soreness, mostly in my quads and lower abs. I just think of it as reminders that there are muscles under the fat and YES I am USING them.

Day 2: 30 Day Shred

Thats right, 12 hours after doing Day 1 I did Day 2. I figured it was the best way to use my time during a load of laundry. And I was right! I did Level 1 again, following the Beginner Girl, but I didn't feel as if I was going to die so much. It sure is motivation when my belly and boobs bounce off beat of my jumping jacks. *damn it*

I also figured that I would be a HUGE hypocrite if I had not worked out before I watched Biggest Loser tonight. I will say that I thought to myself more than once last night, "Oh My God, if they go through 8 hours of this a day on Biggest Loser, I can never do that show! I would die!" Which pissed me off, because I do NOT want to be a Joelle. No way now.

I also mapped a 2.3 mile loop in our neighborhood using Map my Run. Great site by the way! I am going to tackle that later this afternoon with Penny, right before I pick up Alexman.

Some Blogs that are totally giving me motivation are

Ash is Fit

30 Days to Better

Donna Downey Just sift through all her scrap stuff and you will find some amazing body changes! She rocked it.

Downtown Shots

Casey and I went downtown on Friday just to take pictures. He used the Canon and I used the Nikon. These shots are just some of my favorites from that day. Oh! It was FREEZING too!
I think this one is my favorite shot of the day. I love how the wall is all most pure white.
A side walk way at the Alamo. As soon as I started taking this shot, three Asian tourists did too.
Looking up, I did A LOT of looking up shots that day.

Stairs at the La Villita.

An Old Rain Spout.

My favorite person shot, Casey and His Japanese School Girl wave.

Day 1: 30 Day Shred

Okay I did it. I waited till my day 1 chances were all most gone, not actually doing the shred till 9:30pm, but still I DID IT!

I had to do something to counter the cream cheese wantons that I ate with Sharon tonight.

What?! I ate Cream Cheese Wantons???

Yes I did, you don't say No to your best friend when she wants to spend an hour on your couch watching Jon and Kate Plus 8 and eating our vice. I justified it even more by reminding myself that I only have 15 more days with her.

Anyways, I did the Level 1 shred tonight with 5 pound weights, mostly following the Beginner girl. I can do some of the exercises at the advanced level only due to flexibility. But let me be super honest and tell ya'll that IT KICKED MY BUTT!!! I am so out of shape. I took two 5 second breaks, and was so glad to have Jillian giving encouragement on the DVD, I swear she knew that I was wanting to stop each time. BUT I DID IT!!! Woo Hoo.

Tomorrow, I am doing the same thing, but in the morning, most likely working through some of the soreness that I know I will feel. But I DID IT!!!

*grin*

...

Is it just me or is every blogger (both big and small) pregnant or just had a baby???

Dang, I never ever expected this, but I felt a little green eyed monster inside me today when I read a pregnant blogger post and she showed her 35 week belly.

All most 9 years after having Alex I was actually envious of a soon to be mommy. :(

Be prepared, 30 Day Shred is going to take over my blog

That rights folks, I jumped on the Jillian 30 Day Shred bandwagon. But I have a good excuse, really I do. (Besides the extra EXTRA weight that I am hauling around) Target had it scanning at $7.99 instead of its usual $15, you can bet I high tailed it straight to a cashier!

I am excited.

I am all ready counting the days, hey maybe I will be thinner for Valentine's Day!

I had a sort of last hurrah with a night full of bad TV and a best friend.

I don't want to say Good Bye to my favorite creamer.

I just might screw up the balls to post pictures too.

I all ready put it in the DVD player and the weights on the floors. Clothes are laid out too.

I will report back tomorrow with how it went.

I've got something to say.

I've got something to say, and that something is that a bowl full of Spumoni Ice Cream can sometimes be the perfect thing to blog about.

I was thinking of posting, but I kept thinking of things that I am not ready to blog about, things like a January Listed, and the pictures we took downtown, and friends, and family, and neighbors, and our itty bitty birdy friend.

But I wasn't ready to talk about those things. So you get Spumoni.

BEHOLD!

Big bowl and Big spoon.

Hiking

It seems that we tend to go hiking every January. Mostly because the weather is usually great at least one weekend, and there are not that many people out on the trails.

And it seems we always take a picture like this one.

We found Dinosaur tracks in the dry river bed, probably about 8 prints total, this one was the best.

And we explored, sort of, the first homestead a little bit. We were all nervous there because of the many beware of rattlesnakes signs. That is the reason for my simple windmill shot...

And Casey's "artsy" shot. He had to go back behind the homestead in knee high grass to get this one. No way was I going off the trail. Apparently there was some cool ruins back there too!
This is how Alex ended his 6 mile hike, riding Daddy's shoulders. This was the first time we had taken him on the more advanced trails, he did GREAT!

Heading down the last stretch before we got to the car. Aaahhhh pavement, you are so good to our bruised hiking feet.

Let's talk Frugal

I have mentioned it in recent posts all ready, but THANK GOODNESS for Casey's foresight when it came to money. His planning is paying off for us right now, making it so we don't feel as stressed as we could be about money. Our business is greatly effected by the economic worries of many large companies. One of the first things to go when companies want to cut corners is training, which can leave us without an income. And we are all ready feeling the crunch this month, only 6 days in.

So in order to make the money that we do have stretch further, I am going to be exploring and implementing some frugal and thrifty ideas. I figure that any way I can save some money, then I am going to do it.

A Budget: I have struggled with a budget for years. I have made my own, have used others, have done it on paper, in Excel, in Access, but none of them have been "easy" to build or maintain. That is until I stumbled across Pear Budget. They have an online version, with a 30 day free trail membership, but really when I can get it for free and not have to go to a website all the time I am going to do that. Enter the ORIGINAL Pear Budget Spreadsheet, which is still available with a free download on their site. I love it! It's Easy! And all the hard work is done for you! Awesome.

A Menu Plan: Just like a budget I have dabbled with this plan in the past. I always have the best intentions, but don't really ever follow through with it. Rachel has a great post about Menu Planning right now, with lots of great tips. I have figured out that my struggle has been that my plan is too strict. I always felt that if I said we were have Enchiladas on Tuesday then that was it. But what if Tuesday comes and I am tired, or I forgot to buy tortillas, what then? Enter my new menu plan with BACKUP easy meals. I started off Monday with dinner planned for each day, including a leftover day, I don't plan breakfasts or lunches, figuring that we will do basic oatmeal/eggs for breakfast and sandwich/leftovers for lunches. But tonight, the Split Pea Soup that I planned on for dinner just wasn't ready. Enter the easy meal, I planned four of them ( making sure all the ingredients where on hand), which for us was a tater tot casserole that ROCKED with some upgrades AND it stash busted our freezer and pantry. Which leads me to...

A Stocked Pantry and Freezer: I grew up with my mom always building our food stockpile, which she says is something she learned from her mom who lived through the Depression. All I know is that those habits she taught me have bailed my family out of many a lean times, both growing up and current. I tend to buy lots of basic canned goods, tomatoes (all types), beans (great source of protein and fiber), soups (broth, savory, and cream), canned protein (tuna, chicken, etc.), rice, pastas, and baking supplies. For the freezer we usually always have it stocked with chicken breast, ground beef, fajitas, Italian sausages, waffles, veggies, and select meats like roasts, chops, ribs ( all depending on the deal we can find). I don't stress out about coupons, because I found that our store brand is usually cheaper and better than national brands, so coupons were worthless for us. Plus I get as much in bulk from Costco as possible. You just have to make sure to use your stock before it goes bad, which leads me BACK to the menu plan.

A Craft list: I have a confession, I am a craft hoarder. I love to collect it all, thinking that I will use it, but rarely do I. So in order to stop the urge from craft stocking, I have made a list of all the crafts I have started and not finished. So I am essentially shopping from my craft room, digging in all the bins and closet nooks. But for those quick urges I have bundled five crafts with all their supplies in bags for those quick fixes. I have hard projects and easy projects, so now I have no reason to shop. Plus I am purging and building a nice stash for Christmas all at the same time.

Craft Mondays: In order to make sure that I stay on track with my craft list, my mom and I are going to have a Craft Monday each week. We will get together at each others home, craft in the morning, then have a nice lunch. All without spending a dime. That was a rule, only craft and eat what we all ready have. Sure our schedules won't mesh every Monday, but we can spend a lot of time together doing what we love and supporting each other in our New Year's Goals, of Zero Craft spend.

A Clean Home: Not only does cleaning and organizing your home give you something to do, thus stopping you from spending money. It also shows you what you all ready have, so you don't go out and buy more! For instance, Casey discovered that I had two bottles of Worcestershire sauce in the pantry on top of the bottle I all ready had in the fridge. Can you say poor planning?? Keeping our pantry organized as well as the fridge and freezer will help cut those grocery bills. I also had Alex try on all most every shirt he owns just to weed out what doesn't fit and what he has in excess. Seriously the kid is so good on tees and hoodies till next winter. Tomorrow we will tackle shorts, pants, and PJ's. At the end of the enforced wardrobe purge, we had an organized closet, a bag of donations to a family friend, and a pile of broken hangers. Nice! That felt great and it wasn't hard to do, just took a little bit of time.

A Routine: I am usually one of those people who just goes and does what she wants whenever she wants. I drive all over the city just to run an "errand". Enter Errand Day, where I have planned my route and all the places I want to stop on the way. For instance, tomorrow I need to pick up a check from a client, but I can also stop at the Scout shop for some supplies for Thursday meeting, the bread shop to redeem a frequent buyer card, and the Natural Foods store for some whole grain flours. All on the same route with only a little bit more gas being used up. Just plan ahead, make a list, and stick too it.

A Laundry Ultimatum: Laundry, oh Lordy the mountains of it we do here at the house. Towels alone are daunting. Enter in my laundry ultimatum issued to Alex today. Casey still has yet to hear it. :) One towel per week! ONE, so that means after a bath you hang it up to dry. Wash clothes are something else, but one bath towels. Clothing, if it isn't dirty than don't throw it in the bins. Which also means, if you can't hang it up for some reason, than ASK FOR HELP, instead of stashing it back in the bin. PJ's, one set for the week. Wear them, wake up, change clothes, tuck PJ's under your pillow. Please!!! Not only will we save money on the water bill, power bill, and laundry soap, but TIME as well!

I am going to explore many more changes but for now these are the ones that are on my mind. Be on the lookout for household experiments about Power Vampires, DIY gardens, entertaining on a budget and more.

So now I am off to clean the kitchen up from the after dinner mess, brew a cup of tea, fold towels, and knit some rows before bed.

Daybook

FOR TODAY January 5, 2009...

Outside My Window... it is dreary, misty, and cold. Hopefully the mist will turn into some decent rain, we need it!

I am thinking... of our budget and future income. I started with a new budget system this year, Pear Budget's spreadsheet. I am LOVING it!

I am thankful for... warm fuzzy socks, muffins, quilts, Apricot tea, fresh Shepard's bread and groceries.

From the craft room... I finished my stocking that I mentioned last week. Now I am trying to finish up a sweater I started last year. It is my goal for January.

From the kitchen... Shepard's bread, chicken piccatta, and brownies.

I am wearing... jeans, blue Henley, and fuzzy lavender socks.

I am creating... my to-do craft list, all things that I have started an never finished. I am excited about it!

I am going... only out to get Alex, then home to snuggle into warm quilts and eat hot food.

I am reading... my bible, and the newest Merry book. good stuff.

I am hoping... that I stay firm in my newly started habits, especially the budgeting and menu planning. I need to add exercise in there.

I am hearing... whatever is on Comedy Central, Casey is manning the TV.

One of my favorite things... how bright the pictures are with my new camera. Dang it's awesome :)

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
Monday: cooking and baking.
Tuesday: Errands like a wax and check pickup.
Wednesday: Organizing the closets

Thursday: Scout meeting

Friday: Pinewood derby car building

Saturday: Maybe the zoo

Sunday: Church and family time.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

How I make money. All those books on the top shelf are all the different classes I teach. ( Plus the pile of black edged books on the second shelf) The number is getting ready to double since new versions are out, but old versions are still being taught too. Money Money.

Our New Year's Project.

Well we didn't ring in the New Year doing a home project, but we started one today! Alex was in dire need of a playroom reorganization session. So we tackled it today and cleaned EVERYTHING!! Moved furniture, scrubbed baseboards, dumped out drawers, the works.

The massive donation/garage sale pile.
While in the midst of that, Casey said he would head over to the Depot to get some wood cut to make a new table top for Alex's train table. Ya see, Alex doesn't play with his trains any more, he is most definitely in the Lego zone. So we got a piece of wood cut to size, covered it tack paper, and there you have it, a New Lego table. Both drawers underneath it are FILLED with Legos, manuals, platforms, and add-ons.

The new Lego table top. And yes, all those sets are from Christmas.

Casey being the smart hubby that he is, called me asked if we needed anything else from the Depot, which made me jump to the conclusion that Alex's bedroom needed some shelves. A disagreement ensued because Casey knows that I was just jumping the gun. Once he was home with the wood and that had been installed, we measured what we needed and headed back to the Depot, oopps I mean the Lowe's. Two shelves and two corner nooks later, we were home to finish the massive Alex reorg of 2009. And we are all happy with the results!

The new corner shelves, with a quick trip to Target, we got him a lamp too.

The new double shelves, which currently are housing his collection of Webkinz.
His small bookcase, which holds his "novels". He has read all most every single one in there. So if you have ever bought him a book, please know that we use them!

The new Quilt my mom made Alex for Christmas. Isn't it adorable?!

I just went into his room to tuck him in and sooth his lingering cough and found him with a huge smile on his face. He loves the changes. It isn't paint ( yet!), but it is new and organized and he feels great about the changes. That makes me happy on this new year's day.
